This is Bernard when we first moved into cottage, sadly he is no longer with us.
The fire place was painted white , but slowly the paint is coming off !!

We discussed that club on a thread here a few months ago. Some particular advantages but I think most thought they could find something else to do with the money.

Hi Guys and Gals, thanks for admiring my large pair. ( Of Chimneys).
Yes that is the partners Golf, I tell her it must be, almost ,as old as the house!! She loves it, why I can't quite get my head round .
I think I'll skip the club that I mentioned, thanks for your advice, cheers Paul.

Interesting fireplace Paul. We're still trying to make up our minds what to do with a fireplace like yours which is too large to draw. Does the hood work effectively? It seems to look less out of place than a wood burner might.

Alternatively, we have the largest size Stovax Regency stove, which we use with the doors open - fills the space well and is far more efficient than a basic open fire.

Dave hi, when we first moved in a lit the fire we had some smoke in the room, but after elevating the cast iron grate and back,(which weighs a ton), onto a brick plinth it is ok, most of the time.
I wouldn't personally have a woodburner. This kind of fireplace needs and is crying out to be used as it should be.
There is nothing better than getting home after a hard day and sitting in front of an open fire with the lights down low.

I tried that nerd test and gave up halfway when I realised that I didn't even understand the questions.
Thanks for the fire ideas. There is indeed nothing like coming home to a real fire. In fact, at the moment, it is nothing like coming home to a real fire. We'll probably try the 'woodburner with the open doors' answer, and get some sense of a real fire effect whilst still getting enough heat to be able to take our coats off while watching tv. We have a Machine Mart in Grimsby that's advertising Franklin Stoves at half the normal price, so tomorrow morning is already planned.

They are not as large as the largest Stovax, which is what we have, but they are rather cheaper.

The good things are: you have an open fire, the metal convects heat, and you can close the doors on the ash.

Pipework needs thinking about, as does lining and register plate.

I'm with Nemesis both on the MkI Golf (fab car, ours going strong for years) and the Stovax stove. We've got the smallest Stovax in the dining room just to supplement the rather inadequate rad, and it throws out an impressive amount of heat!
