New Member - Lime Mortar

Hi all, I have been reading all your entries over the past year and have now decieded to join in the fun.
I have bought a Grade 2 cottage near Tonbridge in Kent.
I have been told it was originally used as an early hop drying house. The owners living downstairs and the hops where dried out upstairs. ( not too sure how true this is ).300 years old or more.
It is a timerframed stucture with weatherboarding .
Anyway , when we recently started to decorate one of the walls the plaster just fell away with the wall paper.
So I stripped it all back the the lathes and replastered with lime mortar. Am I in trouble with the local authority for doing this without building consent ?
Secondly I went all the way to Eco merchants in Faversham.
Does anyone know of a company who sells lime products that is nearer to my area, cheers Paul.

I don't believe you need consent for like-for-like repairs; firstly, how would anyone ever know and secondly it would mean councils being completely inundated with applications for trivial tasks.

As for local suppliers, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'lime products' but you should be able to buy hydrated lime at almost any builders merchants.

Is that what they call them in Kent. (Just checking that you really have been reading all our posts over the last year )

I'm in Wadhurst and have been using http://www.chalkdownlime.co.uk for 'lime products' who are in Staplecross so are slightly nearer to you than Faversham.
They make good putty and mortar etc. and even lath, but I've not seen any lathes there :wink:
Quite expensive though compared to mike wye and place, but it is an expensive part of the country I suppose

Hi, I wish I could post a picture of the house , but not too sure how to do that yet. It is totally timberframed except for the brick plinth and the very large Inglenook.
Sorry Lath, not Lathes, stupid me.
I am glad that I have not comitted a sin by taking all the plaster away.
The lime products I'm after are the ready mix type that come in plastic tubs.
I did try to go to Chalkdown lime, but they don't open on a Saturday and "Eco" do. Their loss.. Cheers Paul D
