Sadly agree with Mr Bailey, will most likely be an “accidental and very unfortunate” case of arson within a few months of purchase and then a new development put in instead

Couple of nights back I spotted a tv programme about a young couple that had bought a house in the Highlands of Scotland - by accident!

Intrigued, I watched on for a while, not least because the programme came with a warning about unsafe methods and dubious planning - House Crash telly what can I say.

I didn't catch just how they came to buy the place and still haven't fathomed what they were smoking when they did. Maybe the place discussed above was acquired during a similar grey mist of wacky baccy.

The Scottish one was because the dopey lad bid on the wrong auction lot! He thought he was buying a flat in Glasgow. His Canadian girlfriend didn't murder him, surprisingly!

I did get the impression he's not the sharpest knife in the draw. But, I was very impressed by their determination and willingness to try. Albeit while terrified by some of their efforts and hiding my face in my hands or slapping my head in consternation - put me in mind of, and almost as good as, Dr Who from behind the settee.

Sorry Twig, but no. Thats on much earlier in the evening. I will sometimes glance at it when I first sit down for the night but reach for the remote control when the owners renovation efforts consist exclusively of reaching for their wallets.

That said, some of them do 'get stuck in' and do for themselves.

Looking at the photo it's hard to believe there is much left to work with anyway. Even if there was an 'unfortunate' and 'accidental' fire, wouldn't the new owner still be legally obligated to reinstate a pastiche of the original house?

Apparently MDF panelling is very trendy at the moment. Especially among the Instagram doer-uppers, to which many of those Renovation TV people belong...

Am I trendy? I've yet to rip out the crap MDF tongue-and-groove effect wainscotting the previous owners stuck on over downstairs loo tiles with gripfill.

It's sort of "rubbish-but-I've-not-yet-got-around-to-sorting-it-out" shabby-chic.

"Shabby chic" - now there is a term to safely consign to & leave behind in bad 1990's home makeover shows
