we have a 17century cottage with large inglenook one end and a crudly blocked firplace the other.can anyone recomend a builder used to dealing with listed properties to reinstate the fireplace. although i am capable of doing the work i just do not have the time.most builders are not realy interested as it needs a bit of thought

What are you planning on putting back into the fireplace? An open fire in a large inglenook generally doesn't work. You will need either a stove or some sort of smoke hood.

Are you wanting to re-instate both fireplaces? Do you have any pics and sizes of the fireplaces, flues etc? It might help people give you more / better suggestions.

Any how I am sure it cant be to big a job to unblock the fir(e)place if you really have no more local builders you are about an hour from us. So give me a pm if you need a builder who knows 17th C.

This summer we've had a 16th centry inglenook exposed and restored by John Ford Inglenook Restorations http://www.inglenookrestorations.co.uk and would highly recommend them.

I would imagine they aren’t the cheapest builders around but are true specialists.

Ended up getting them to restore the brick floor that was found under a 2” concrete slab as well.

hi thanks for the replies this cottage has had a lot of character removed although the main inglenook is basically ok including the bread oven. However the south end fireplace has been blocked off with brick internally and does not resemble
what has been made at the front face. i wish to install a small wood burner as we also have one in the inglenook which works well i will upload a picture but i do not think it will explain what should be there

The Inglenook (literally meaning chimney corner) fireplace generally came into being in the mid-late 16th century. Large recessed openings reminiscent from the large medieval halls. Seating areas set within the frame and a freestanding dog grate that held the traditional log fire. The open fireplace was the only means of heating, cooking and damp control within a house right up until the 19th Century.

i suppose therefore that as long as it's recessed with a chimney above it - it's an inglenook - (chimney corner) fireplace - dont think that it's got to be of a certain age, just of a certain type

The big revelation of the Weald and Downland Museum this year was that our 14th century ancestors must have looked and smelt like kippers. Interesting that tobacco only arrived here about the same time that the open-fire smoke disappeared.

I did think that an inglenook was different to a normal fireplace.
Is it the sitting inside thing then?

I saw the kipper effect at Tatton park mediaeval hall one summer, it was pitch black indoors with just a hot smoky fire on the floor. I know how bad we all smell after bonfire night so gawd knows what they all looked and smelt like.

I suspect that smelling smoky was pretty mild compared with some of the offensive odours that people emitted in those days.

I burnt a piece of toast yesterday and was coughing for 20 minutes - imagine voluntarily kipperifying yourself - still perhaps it would help kill off the lice !!
