Hi All,
Trying to get the refurbishment and extension of our old cottage (not listed) in Lancashire underway.
Really struggling with the inter-relationship and requirements of/for builders, architects, building control, planners, structural engineers etc. Never mind the likes of energy consultants who seem to be coming out of the woodwork.
One issue at the mo is the floor. It's flagstones on earth and we want to have a floor structure as shown on p118 of the Old House Handbook i.e. 150mm LECA, breathable membrane, then 100mm limecrete with LECA slab, then heating pipes in a 75mm lime/sand screed. Flags to go back on top.
Trouble is we have no calcs for the thermal performance of this set up and have just been told by an architect this morning that Building Regs still call for a waterproof layer to be installed.
Has anyone got around/over these problems and can point me to some document or whatever that I can quote back at these people.
If I can't give thermal figures for the floor it seems BC may require silly depths of insulation under the roof/ceiling and so on.
All these so called professionals just seem to want to tick boxes and don't seem to want to consider anything other that the latest norm in construction techniques. Sorry ranting now.....
Thanks
John
