New cast iron soil pipe installation

Hello all

I have some lengths of traditional 4" eared LCC soil pipe that I need to install. The thing im not sure about it that it says to wet the cord before installation but it doesnt say what with, im guessing water but just wondered if anyone knows?

I’d guess London County Council, they introduced quite a lot of building standards in Victorian times to improve the standards of building in London. Some of these went on to become British Standards. But I’m guessing!

Cord - surely if it was anything other than water they’d say? I’d just assume water!

I'd go with London County Council.
They set lots of building standards, which became the model across the country. Gas taps were often stamped LCC, and I have seen a nice WC bowl with "LCC Pattern" incorporated in the glazing.

My soil pipes arnt from Hargreaves (I just used their fitting instructions) they are old Allied Ironfounders items. But pipes from all different manufacturers label them as LCC. Longbottoms refer to them still as LCC for example.

London County Council I would imagine is the correct answer. It makes sense it predating the British Standard and the name must have just stook.

Large, Cumbersome and Costly is without doubt the true meaning, but thankfully for me I only have to come to terms with the first 2

Hmm. I've a very ugly external soil pipe on Feltwell Towers, in modern plastic. It needs sorting anyway, it's had various old connections made to it that are now blanked off, and I need at some point to move 2 of the toilets in the house (want to make a bigger main bathroom, at the expense of making our en-suite smaller). The only saving grace of the current soil pipe is it's tucked away at the side of the house, it does look hideous though.

Cast iron would look best but be a right pig to fit, would mean digging the driveway up to connect it to the plastic underground soil for starters. I confess I may go for plastic imitation cast iron - the guttering you can get doesn't look convincing due to the joints, but chosen carefully the Brett Martin soil or Floplast pipe system could look OK I think. Heresy!

I was seriously considering cast look plastic soil pipe, I think it was Floplast that looked the best, but fortunatly for me I found some cast iron pipes cheap.

I am connecting the cast pipe to plastic underground drainage, although I havent tried yet theres every chance that the cast will slide straight into a plastic socket, the sizes are very close. Failing that I will bring a little plastic stub out of the ground and connect it to the cast with one of the rubber couplers that are tightened with jubilee clips. Then cover it with a bit of brickwork up to the cast.

But yes the cast is definatly more tricky to install, at least a 2 man job.

I just took delivery of the cast iron soil pipes today. I'm interested to know how best to fit them to the wall. Does anyone still use the traditional 4" nails and wooden plugs or a modern plug and screw? They're seriously heavy...

When I fitted my cast iron down pipes I used M8 through bolts (or parabolts as I know them). For 2 reasons, first they give a good fixing and secondly I can undo the nuts and remove the pipes for maintenance (repainting the backs of the pipes) if required.

When I install my soil pipes I will use the same bolts just ones that are a bit longer.

When fitting mine I positioned them so I was only drilling into brick for the best chance of a good fixing, thankfully they were all a success. It is worth noting though that my house is built from hard red brick.

My house isnt listed though so it doesnt matter what I do. Would listing mean you would have to use nails, I dont know.

Far, far, far better than traditional masonry nails and wooden plugs, or a modern plug and screw, on a brick building at least are masonry bolts. They cut their own thread into the brick and put very little expansive force on the brick, far less than a shield anchor type does, so less likely to break the brick - the hole you drill is slightly larger than the shaft of the bolt, the sharp thread then cuts into the brick to grip. Get the flange headed type, paint the heads black once installed (or whatever colour your pipes are) and no one will ever notice.

You can unscrew them easily for future maintenance needs. Wooden plugs and traditional nails come loose in the end and if not are a pain to remove if you need to for maintenance, plus the nails rust through eventually, I've had a couple that have gone. I had to take some 13 year old bolts out the other day and they looked like new.

I ran out this weekend part way through attaching some downpipes, had to pop out and get some Screwfix own brand ones - they were much cheaper and worked fine. Had to put one right next to the edge of a brick, still worked fine and didn't break the brick.

Upon Feltwells advice I choose to try the brick screws for my soil pipe installation. I brought the ones from Screwfix as linked and am quite happy with them. My only concern would be that because the thread is so coarse it feels as if they might come loose over time, time will tell.

I can also confirm that they perform well right at the edge of a brick

I never thought about the "coming loose" thing. I've had some multi-monti ones in place for several years now on rainwater downpipes and they've been OK though, so I reckon you'll be all right.
