Latest Blue Plaques
Two blue plaques this month celebrate heritage heroes. The architectural historian and author of Buildings of England series Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902 - 1983) is commemorated with an English Heritage Blue Plaque at 2 Wildwood Terrace, Hampstead, NW3, where he lived from 1936 until his death in 1983. The Pevsner family still occupies the house.
The second blue plaque commemorates the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham (1854 - 1920) at 10 Haslemere Road, London N8, where he lived from 1894 to 1904. Matcham was responsible for designing and building some of the most celebrated theatres in Britain, including the London Coliseum (1904) and Palladium (1910), and the lavish Grand Theatre (1894) and Tower Ballroom (1899) in Blackpool.
The Blue Plaques Scheme has been running for 140 years. English Heritage has since 1986 erected around 250 plaques, bringing the total number to over 800. English Heritage welcomes nominations - for more information on the criteria and process see http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/blueplaques
