Having retired three years ago, I wholeheartedly support Biff's contention.
Once you rid yourself of all the debts that typical modern living stacks up on you - mortgage, car loans, pension payments, insurances, etc. etc., I can vouch for the fact that you'll be amazed how cheaply you can live.
OK - "the best things in life are free" might be something of a misguided mantra (chocolate still costs money!), but downsizing and living frugally is a rewarding experience in itself.

Hmmm... I already do/have done the things on the list - I thought I was just skint but I can now boast instead I have downshifted!

Beer though - hard to make that for nowt. The best things in life can be had more cheaply if you are resourceful, but some are not always entirely free!
