Naive lime question

A very quick question for the lime experts, with apologies if I'm being stupid even to ask.

I STILL haven't quite finished the lathing for my ceiling, but very soon now I will start the plastering. My home-made lime putty is very well matured (since June iirc) and has worked beautifully in a few little patching jobs. However, I won't have enough for the ceiling, so is there anything against buying another bag of dry hydrate and just bunging it into the plastic dustbin with the rest (with more water of course), stirring it all up a bit and leaving it just a few days this time before using it? The only danger I can think of is if the new stuff has "gone off" in the bag - will it spoil the old? As I know the first batch is good, might it be better to use that up first?

My sentiments exactly. Right then, unless someone else comes up with a compelling reason not to, I'll go down the bunging route.

Only reason I'd not do it is if I made a cock up/lime was poor quality and I ruined all my hard work so far.

When it comes to wine, I'm with the £4 bottle suggestion but if we are talking putty I side with the Nemesis approach.

I find doing anything with the putty in the bin next to impossible (except cutting bits out to use). I can't see how you could reliably mix fresh hydrate into the mature putty, short of putting it all through a cement mixer and putting it back in the bin. Better to start a second batch and use it when you need to.

For the avoidance of any doubt, Biff has much, much more experience than me in this (as do Nemesis and Skier-Hughes). It may actually be down to inexperience that I find the putty bin a pig to do anything with!

But to be serious, thank you Worms. I'm less experienced than all four of you, so I'll probably find the mixing difficult too, which is another reason for starting a fresh batch.

Yes, I'd agree with Wobs actually. It just didn't make such a neat job of cutting and pasting other peoples comments. Being practical, you can't really stir up a bin full of putty.
