nails or screws

If I was to try and make a door in an authentic manner, should I use nails or screws to fix the hinges and latches?

I have partially made one door. I have fixed the ledges using clenched rose head nails and am awaiting the delivery of hinges.

I used screws for the hinge and clenched nails for the latch. Chosen mainly for the visual effect.

Screws for the hinges - given the pressures they will be exposed to, surely nails will pull out quite quickly.

A properly clenched nail won't pull out (any more than a screw will anyway). Also think we are talking about fixing hinges to the door rather than fixing hinges to the frame. Definitely screws for fixing door hinge to frame.

Or perhaps coach bolts if it is an external hinge and the door opens outwards?

What style and "age" of door, 'Marm? If it's to be a ledge-and-brace planked door, then clenched nails would certainly be more authentic. And I completely agree with MdB's comments above.

It is an internal plank door with ledges. No braces.

I will use screws to fix to the frame then, nails for the handle and I had better think about the strap part on the door.
