'Does anyone have any idea what black pipes/bars are? They seem to enter from either side of the exterior of the building then disappear into the wall. There's one coming in from either side in this room (which has two exterior walls) and just one coming in towards the chimney in another. The CO didn't know.

Do they have plates/ crosses and nuts on them on the outside of the property?

They're tie rods, preventing your house from falling down.

Can't see any ties outside but if they are holding our house up then this is indeed very helpful! Thanks Gareth. Do you know in that case what they might be attached to either inside or out? Two of them kind of sit a bit proud of the wall.

They're not attached to anything - they should run all the way through to the other side.

I'll check more closely next time I'm there but there doesn't appear to be anything at either end (or even I might have realised they were ties - or maybe not)

looking at the slope of the roof and the height of the wall with its expected thickness I would imagine that these rods could perhaps be attached to the wallplate.

We have a variety of similar ties. Some go right through the walls into round plates. Some go through the walls and are splayed out like split pins. Some don't go right through the walls but are hooked over the roof plate beams, as Jon suggested.

I think every old house I saw in Belgium was covered in them. There seemed to be a lot of old building still standing so I guess it worked...

Belgian timber framing's really odd though (to English eyes) because the tenons go right through the mortices and stick out on the outside of the buildings (Assuming what I saw at Bokrijk open air museum had been re-erected correctly)

Not that I know of. The ties haven't prevented the house moving over the years either, although I suppose they may have prevented it from falling apart!
