My new fireplaces!

Hi

I have finally had my fireplaces fitted. It was loads of work, we needed new stacks, the internal flues and chimneys virtually rebuilt (and lined) but am so pleased with the results. I cant work out how to add pictures so that they show automatically so have shown links for before and after.

You have every right to be pleased; they look very good. I especially like the middle fireplace (pangs of jealousy, there!)

I can understand how pleased you are to have the new fireplaces installed. My 1890's house has working fireplaces, but they're modern 1980's DIY numbers. Whenever I talk of replacing them (after I redo the kitchen, so I'm still a couple of years away from that project), my mother looks puzzled, as they work perfectly well and look neat and modern and she doesn't see the need to go through all that mess and bother. But a nice fireplace really makes a room, doesn't it?

Did the surround tile come with them or did you buy them separately? I've been looking at both antique and reproduction fireplaces and have seen them sold both ways- with and without tile.

The hearths look great (grate?) too. Were they original, or did you have to build them yourself?

The fireplaces with the smaller tiles I got from house which was very sadly being knocked down for a new monstrosity to be put in its place - still their loss my gain . The tiles are original to the fire.

The one with the larger tiles I got from a reclaimation yard. However, although it did have its original tiles in it they were very damaged so we chose another set which are original Edwardian tiles but not original to that fire.

The small bedroom fire I got from ebay for £50 - a true bargain!

We did look at reproduction and the main difference I noticed was the look of the tiles, no matter how old they tried to make them look they just didnt. The smaller bedroom style reproduction fireplaces without tiles looked much more convincing but they tended to be really OTT and to be honest cause we shopped around the originals were no dearer.

The hearth tiles I got from a tile shop called clay and glaze in Cookham. They are supplied from a company called http://www.originalfeatures.co.uk. They had a website with design pattersn on and I just chose three so that each one was different.
