My lap vents have arrived.

Hello, you may recall we have a horrible condensation problem in our loft. Yes, I know we should have dealt with this by now but firstly out of sight is out of mind, secondly it dried out in the Summer, and thirdly the cash ran out. But we know we still have to address this so the plan is to get the insulation that has been stuffed down between the tiles and the sloping portions of the bedroom ceilings blocking the eave vents removed...in the Spring when I have saved up a bit more cash as half the roof has to come off to reach these inaccessible parts. In the meantime we are going to put six lap vents in the roof, which can be done from inside the roof so no scaffolding needed. Has anyone had any experience of installing lap vents and do you have any tips to pass on. Not that I'll be doing it myself. The builder is going to tackle that but he's never installed lap vents either. :roll:

Mine were tough to fit as I have Cotswold stone slate on the roof, so the rafters are closely spaced and the thinnest lapvents are still too wide, so I had to have gaps shaved out of the rafters to fit in the lapvents. That took a fair bit of planning.

But if your rafters are wide enough to begin with, then fitting them is simple. There should be enough sag in the underfelt for them to slip easily into the underfelt overlap, and I seem to remember it wasn't difficult to cut a slit in the felt where it was very tight. They're simple to fix in place too, just nails through a strap that feeds around the top of the lapvent.

I fitted one with an extractor outlet on it which has worked a treat too - I do worrry longer term about the integrity of the tile battens where the warm wet air from the extractor must be continually creating condensation on the battens, but it's a very small area, so I'm hoping this should be a problem. If I fitted this one again, I would have treated the battens.
