My house has got no soffits....

Anyway, no soffits, so no fascia, original gutter was on metal brackets with spikes driven into the wall.

These are all now rusting and falling down, taking guttering with it so need to re-do guttering.

Anyone got any good reasons why I shouldn't just run a new "fascia" all along the wall and then attach new guttering to that?

But generally I'd advocate replicating the original if possible. It worked for 100 + years, so whilst it would be more bother it would also have more longevity. How are you going to effectively repaint this fascia? From a maintenance perspective you might be better paying the money now rather than later?

I would also look at replacing the rise and fall brackets rather than adding a facia board but im not a fan of facia boards. Fitting new rise and fall brackets is a straight forward job, I added a couple to the neighbours house recently

Another vote to keep it as it was...…..

If you've exposed rafter ends you can screw brackets onto the side of those. Otherwise drive-in or rise and fall brackets.



Just noticed, Longbottom's have dragged themselves slightly closer to this century - swanky new website, you can still only download a copy of the catalogue to then ring them up rather than buy items online though. You can email them now as well! I bet they still won't take credit cards and you have to post them a cheque though :lol:

Such a great range of products from them, plus they'll do bespoke work most others won't, I'm surprised they've never looked to employ some "bright young thing" to sort out a transactional website and the office processes to take credit cards!

What did you do, just hammer them into the mortar? Or is it drill a hole and fix with mortar / resin?

I drilled out (SDS drill and bit, sounds aggressive but only light pressure required in lime) just enough mortar to be able to knock it in with a snugg fit, knock in as far as required to bring to the correct centre line of the guttering. Without drilling a slot first you risk loosening the bricks above as there is only likely to be a couple of courses. I then refitted and levelled the guttering and finally did any pointing around the brackets as required.

The brackets dont have to be rock solid in the mortar, the tighter the better but as long as theres minimal up and down movement it will be fine

Sounds good, mine is bath stone ashlar on a rubble wall so going to be a bit more complex, some of the old failed ones split whole blocks of ashlar.

Might experiment on some spare stone I have in the garden first! Or just whack up a fascia and use.normal brackets, I'm moving out in two years...

It will be the rust that split the blocks, rust expansion is very damaging. Concrete rot is the rebar within the concrete rusting and cracking the concrete.

Its a good idea to practice on something that doesnt matter first
