Multi-Fuel Stove

Hi there

I have plans to install a multifuel stove and to burn smokeless coal as I am in a smoke control area. Presuming that my chimney is tests ok and the fact I plan to burn smokeless coal which, I am told, contains less moisture compared to wood. Would I need to line my chimney? It is only likely to be used during winter evenings and cold days.

Also I need to protect the back and side of the fireplace, does anyone know what I need to use to plaster / protect it with??

Any information would be greatly received.

We've been told by the chimney sweep (engineer) that chimneys need to be lined when burning wood to protect from the tar deposits from the wood which could cause a chimney fire. We currently have an open coal fire and don't have our chimney lined and it's been ok and to date is sound despite the odd log being thrown on.

We were advised to have our chimneys lined prior to the installation of a multi fuel rayburn and log burning stove. We will probably take heed of the advice as it's a lot cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of a chimney fire.

I do believe current building regs insist you have a lined/insulated chimney.

We are currently in the process of resourcing all of the stuff to line our chimney for a wood burning stove. It is my understanding that if you are burning smokeless fuel it burns at a higher temperature and you will need a 904 grade liner (if you are going down the stainless steel flexi-liner route).

We have similar plans afoot and was pondering over lining for a wee while. Pondering didn't last long when my fraught friend arrived at the house and informed me he had nearly burnt down his newly acquired 200yr old cottage. His wife thought it would be 'nice' to warm the house up on the second day of moving in and asked him to light the stove whilst she went to the supermarket. She was a little aghast to arrive back an hour or so later and her drive was taken up by a fire tender.

Luckily my friend quickly realised the chimney was on fire and whilst waiting for fire service to attend stuck hose pipe up the chimney and blasted gallons of water up. Fire service attributed the fire to debris falling down chimney probably old bird's nest. It was a narrow escape and this weekend he's having the chimley lined and I'm not thinking about getting mine done I am!

A chimney liner won't automatically stop bird trying to build nests in the chimney though . . . make sure you have a bird-proof 'grill' or similar for that.

A hose pipe up the chimney must have made a horrible mess. Fortunately, our 'bird-assisted' chimney fire of many years ago just burned itself out with no damage. It was an impressive 'draw' while it lasted though!

Having the chimney swept prior to lighting the fire would have prevented that though. Surely lining the chimney just stops bricks, etc falling down and soot and tar deposits building up on rough surfaces. Lining the chimney is no substitute for regular sweeping.

Lining the chimney will ensure that all waste gases go up and out the top rather than leaching through into other rooms on it's way up.
