According to the newspaper, the shadow health secretary spent £4,600 on renovating his thatched Tudor cottage in Melbourn in 2005 before putting it on the market. It was sold in June 2006 for £433,000.

The Telegraphsaid that "months before" Mr Lansley sealed the £433,000 sale, he "flipped" his second home designation to his Georgian flat in London, where claims included £750 for a Laura Ashley sofa.

In August and September 2005, the Tory MP for Cambridgeshire South is reported to have had the Melbourn house painted inside and out at a cost of more than £2,000, including £965 for Farrow & Ball paint in some rooms.

I hope he had Listed buildings consent!!!!!!!!!

Still, it keeps the recession/depression, unemployment, the war in Afghanistan and climate change out of the news.

It's one thing to have £42k knocking around it's quite another to give it back to the tax payer.

Good god, "give" and "tax payer" in the same sentence for an MP, it's almost a contradiction in terms.

This gesture must rank high in the level of an MP's purification (reducing temporal punishment for venial faults) in the Purgatory to which they all now survey.
Only a couple of millennia to go.

Has anyone heard of the married couple who becames MPs and didn't have a home to call their own?
They both had to make do with second homes poor things.

Poor things indeed (well not in the financial sense, obviously). But MPs have such busy lives I'm sure such 'mistakes' are easy to make. Look at poor (see previous parentheses) Elliot Morley claiming £800 per month for a mortgage that was paid off almost two years ago. Easy mistake. After all, who amongst us can remember if we've paid off our own mortages? :roll:

I knew that was a lie, because I've read your posts about the moat. If you were a real MP, you would have paid someone a couple of thousand to clean the moat out for you, like Douglas Hogg.

I was just discussing on Tuesday with a chap to come and clean out the moat!! Due to the very dry weather it is getting very low, (well a build up of sludge hasn't helped), so we are going to leave it until mid summer, when it may well be quite dry, pump out the rest of the water, useful for watering the veg, then he'll get his digger in and get it sorted, then hope for a wet autumn
