Moving an AGA

I've been offered a gas fired AGA on the condition that I remove it from it's current resting place.
Has anybody had experience of moving an AGA as a DIY job? I've got a van and plenty of rollers / timber / winching gear etc. but need to know about dismantling, and the pitfalls to avoid.
A web search hasn't really turned up the results, so over to you!

Also, bear in mind that it will probably (officially!) need building regulation approval for chimney etc.

ooooh, golly gosh! Not sure that you should attempt it. Dismantling could be an issue because you do need to re-instate everything very carefully to get an efficient heat flow.

Oil supply, I think, would probably have to be commissioned by a registered person. Again floor levels of the cooker and the oil supply pipe are fairly crucial. As indeed are the building regulations regarding the flue etc.

To move it complete would be well nigh impossible.

However that's not to say that it hasn't been done before. Maybe you should consider making some covert enquiries from Aga or from Twyford second hand Agas. You might at least get some hints and tips. I do know that my recent removal company remarked that they were very thankful I was not moving my prveious Aga, so they must have had to do it at sometime or another.

I've just moved our oil fired rayburn a matter of 4 feet back into the chimney recess.

After disconnection we removed the doors, trays, burners, plate rack and anything else which was loose.

It still took 3 men to move it those few feet, they are very heavy.

Putting it back together was not a problem.

As it had been moved we have had to comply with BR, so a stainless flue pipe has been installed, and after fitting all those nice double glazed windows to retain the heat, because the government said I couldn't have single glazed, I now have to fit an air brick in the same room, because the government says???????

I know we need ventilation for these things, but it alls seems quite silly to me, fit a double glazed window to stop draughts, but make sure that you have a trickle vent to let air in!!!!!!!!

Not really any help to you at all, but I would suggest, taking pictures of what you take apart or make diagrams, or even both.
Make sure you have plenty of help.
Check the weight of the aga in question and ensure the van is up to it.

How old is the Aga in question?

We were told by our local Aga Man that it wouldn't be possible to move our four-oven one, or convert it to gas/oil because it was so old that bits of it would have welded themselves together.

We didn't take any chances with the pipework, so cut it away from the rayburn, leaving us plenty to use to make a reconnection. I don't think we could have removed it from the rayburn, which is some twenty/thirty years old.
