Motivation!

After the long grey days of Jan, Feb, March, we at last have some sunshine, giving me the oomphh needed to repaint the awkward panels in the bathroom--- leaning over the edge of the roll top bath to reach them is NOT funny, & absolutely no room to move around the rest of the appliances either--- whilst cursing in true St Trinians fashion I then thought of Moo and the painting she has posted about, Nigel his curtains, bathroom dilemmas, wall woes, intruders and a plethora of things we've all been through over the past 6 months and realised that my lot is not so bad! Thanks Folks for sharing the trials and tribulations, there's always somebody worse off somewhere!

Any way,a whils ago we PPUKers had a discussion about painting old style radiators, our bathroom one is a bronzey metal finish--- what's the best way forward? It seems that eggshell would take on it, since I dinged the edge whilst getting to the panel behind.


The end of the broken RTV story in our drawing room is --- the pin was fine, just the plastic cap had siezed, so awaiting a 'man who can' to drain the system and fit new RTV
Absolutely don't dare to do that------! The lovely velevt carpet has dried out around the leak caused by OH, no harm done, so he's 'orff the 'ook.

I'm surprised at you, Joss. The obvious answer is to do them while you're having a bath. Have a large canvas ready on the bathroom floor so that J can do a Jackson Pollock, when you've finished. :wink:

If the only problem is in the cap (which I assume is removable - most are), why not buy a new TRV of the same make/model, then fit the cap from the new one on to the old one? It would save the cost of a plumber and the hassle of draining down.

We went to Plumb Centre, the new Lifestyle RTV is just slightly different and would not fit as you described, that's why------!

Assuming you have lots of columns and sections, these can be very fiddly to paint. I have used spray enamel in the past, but I am now a convert to having mine powder coated. Depending on size, you should expect to pay £40-£80...but you should never have to paint again and the finish will be great

We had our reclaimed rads powder-coated and the finish seems to be indestructible (even Nitromors doesn't touch it).

Powder coating is when a fine "plastic" dry powder is positively charged and sprayed onto a negatively charged item, so it receives an even coating - it's then baked in an oven so it melts and flows and forms a "skin", coating the item. It's not like painting as there is no solvent involved. It's an industrial process and it has to be done in a specialist facility. The item being coated is usually grit or bead blasted first to remove all traces of old paint, rust and any other contaminants.

Powder coating gives a much harder surface finish than most "normal" paints.

Thanks for explaining, I have heard them talk about this process on TV on some of the custom car/ bike shows and vaguely wondered about it....... but not enough to go to the huge trouble of asking Google. Very handy to know it's an option for reclaimed radiators.

Joss, as was mentioned above spray enamel paint works well on radiators. But you could also paint them with an emulsion paint of your choice, and then paint clear radiator paint over the top of it. So you can have them exactly the same colour as your walls, if you wish.
