hi new to this form- seems really informative.

Basically just ripped up the carperts to reveal generally good condition of parquet wooden floor. However there are some paint marks, some darker marks that seem to be embedded deeper in the wood. Im quite sure the floor doees not need a sander. Question is what is the best way of cleaning it up and what oils would you recommed to bring it back to life?

Congrats on finding such a nice floor. It has almost certainly been varnished in the past, so you will need to remove the varnish before you can get any benefit of a new finish.

I would recommend that you either remove the finish with a nitromors type stripper and wire wool (slow but effective), or you try using a sharp bladed scrapper such as a Scarsden (I think that's the spelling) scrapper. Or you hire a quality belt sander and sand it in line with the grain. I wouldn't recommned a big floor sander unless you are experienced, you can create a lot of damage with one in inexperienced hands.

Alternatively if you can afford it, get Toby to finish the floor for you, he's a specialist.

In theory I entirely agree with you, Sue. However, I'm a bit worried about the possibility of sanding a parquet floor in line with the grain. If it's the usual herringbone parquet, I reckon this would be extremely difficult to achieve.

I certainly endorse your comments about hire-shop floor sanders.
