Morrells Oil Based Woodstain Needed - Or Advice for Similar

Hi all, we're looking to match some of the panelling / fitted bookcases that were already in the property we've moved into. I know which stain product has been used as there was some left over and when we've done our own tests it's a very close if not identical match to whats already here.

The problem is I need more of it and looks like i can't get anymore new. When i called Morrells and gave them the stain code they confirmed it's discontinued. I've tried some samples of their newer stuff but it just wasn't close enough of a match. I know it's a long shot but wondering if any one on forums such as this may have some laying around that they no longer need and are willing to sell. I'll ofcourse travel and make sure it's worth your while as much as humanly possible.

It's Morells Walnut reproduction oil, Code 0090 / 000B

Sry haven’t got any but have you tried replicating it with Van Dyke crystals? They’re made from walnut husks and can produce a very dark stain.

thanks for the reply and suggestion @aockenden. I'm not familiar with them but from doing a quick google search looks to be water based and looks quite dark indeed, maybe too dark for us. Worth mentioning that to get a really close match we actually dilluted the Walnut oil stain down to 75:25 stain/spirits. I really should've put some photos up to show the tone that we're aiming for here. Though alternatives aside, i am hoping someone somewhere has an uneeded amount of the 0090 stuff we need. I can see one of the tins is dated Aug2023 so really not that old! finger's crossed.

Van Dyke crystals can be dilluted to taste, but good luck with your search!

I suspect you will be out of luck finding an unopened supply of that stain AND in a sufficient quantity to meet your needs. Your best course may be to buy some darker shade of a stain as near to your target colour as you can and progressively thin this to test its final dry appearance using a few small pieces of waste wood.

If you're really keen in on getting a match and happy to pay for it id contact Toby Newell, formerly of this good parish. I believe he mixes his own stains and is regularly called upon to create matches.
