Well, I'm going to be controversial now (what - me?!). I think those chairs are awful. Lumpy and clunky - a totally failed attempt to create something refined and classic.

This is true Penners, £35 quid on EBay then, providing they sold in the first place.

Edit - they dont look Victorian either.

The saleroom is about 10 minutes walk from my house, so I will pop in to have a look.

I am sure they are Victorian, but I can't say I like them as much as the rather more classical types. Although undoubtedly Victorian, my house is still predominantly classical in its detailing. These, for sale in Ireland, are gorgeous:

I would agree that hall chairs are ridiculous if viewed as purely utilitarian pieces of furniture. However their real function is display, not comfort, and some achieve that end quite splendidly. A spacious, otherwise unfurnished, hall would have a set of these around the walls, adorned perhaps by the family crest. In a hall of today it is always useful to have a piece of furniture over which visitors' coats can be draped etc, so I think they could still have a place.

Whoever she was must have been very limber. To be able to kneel down and smoosh your nose into the mould whilst smoking a cigar is no mean feat.

Popped in to see them today. They look better in the flesh than in the picture. There was another pair too:

which I preferred but did not like enough to place a bid for but my 11 year old was fascinated by a mid-70s Subutio football set on the adjacent table.
