Hi,
Just wondering what you experts would recommend in my situation.
I have a 17th C half-timbered "black and white" house with brick infill panels, some probably original (narrow bricks) and some later. The panels are painted on the outside with modern magnolia masonary paint, and the timbers with black paint. I haven't seen any non-breathability issues in the 15 years I've been here, probably because the timbers/panels are all upstairs, the downstairs mostly having been long-replaced with brick.
Most of the panels have a soft cement infill between the brick panels and the timbers, which now needs raking out and replacing. There are no leaks yet (that I've found!) but there will be if I don't do something soon.
My dilema is what to repoint the timber-brick boundaries with, and how to finish. The "correct" thing is presumably lime mortar or even putty and limewash, but the edges won't then match the bulk of the panel. I don't think I can remove the masonary paint without causing excessive damage to the brick surfaces.
Can I paint lime mortar or putty with masonary paint? Or if I lime wash, can I lime wash over the masonary paint without it all peeling off in a year or two?
Or, dare I suggest, should I use a soft cement motar (lime-rich?) as has been used previously and just repaint with masonary paint?
I can't be the first to be in this situation - most of the black and white buildings aruond here seem to be painted with masonary paint. What does everybody else do?
Thoughts gratefully received!
