Missing decorative render? *PIC*

We have just moved into a grade 2 listed victorian villa in Liverpool misguidingly restored in the eighties (cement render to the rear elevation, gypsum plaster inappropiate coving concrete cellar etc etc... Our first task is to make sure the roof is sound replace plastic gutters with cast iron and reputty ?sp the existing modern casement windows, we will replace with sliding sash windows when funds permit. Seen some nice oak ones somewhere down south... Does anyone have any advice about replacing the missing decorative render(correct term?) its about 18 inches long the missing section see pic. I'm not at all sure where to start. Thanks Justin

These would origianlly have been run in situ - ie formed from wet render using a piece of metal cut to the reverse profile held in a wooden box-like structure which is moved back and forth against a temporary wooden batten.

A similar technique should be used to repair the detail. Fortunately in your case enough of the moulding remains to provide a fence for running the profile.

Nigel, thanks for the reply, am I right in assuming this wet render would be a mix of lime and sand?
I have also included another picture of further damage, would the original craftsmen have standard moulds or would they make them up on site?

I have nver done outside work like this so I am not sure.

As it happens my neighbour opposite is renovating the facade of a stucco faced building which has many mouldings and other details. All the original stucco has been removed (God knows why - this seem far too drastic), but being a conservation area they will have to replace it.

I will observe with interest and let you know.
