minton tiles

I have a beautiful minton tile hallway, which i am eager to restore, but the last owner in their wisdom have covered it in self leveling compound. I have been able to flake away a tiny part but I am at a loss how to remove the compound. I have tried to use a steamer on it to try and make it more flexiable , but alas this failed. I do not want to attack it to roughly because i fear it may damage the 80 year old tiles.

Does any body know how to best remove the compound, or is it just best to attack it with a hammer and chisel. Are the tiles likely to scratch ?

Ouch! Glaze on tile and ceramics can be porous enough to bond to glues and mastics, but maybe you'll get lucky. Self-leveling compounds are made with many different bases, but if one was used with a polyurethane base, then you might have some luck with solvents such as mineral spirits or denatured alcohol.

You can try in a test area, but I would be very wary of going at tiles with a hammer and chisel. The compound would have to be VERY brittle and you'd have to have a very light touch to avoid breaking the tiles to bits.
