Hiya,
We recently had to clear my father in laws house after he passed away and wrapped up in the loft we found these 4 tiles. We were intrigued to find out more about them and spent considerable time searching for clues to their origans....all to no avail.
They are marked on the back "MINTON HOLLINS AND CO. PATENT TILE WORKS STOKE ON TRENT" the only other marks on back are a circle with a line under it and the letter J.
They look like they could be hand painted under the glaze although most articles say most tiles were printed. The other unusual feature is that these tiles measure 9 inches square, I've only found reference to tiles of 6 and 8 inches square.
The artwork is signed on two of the tiles by what appears to be a "J.Keeling"
Wife now wants to mount these in the fireplace of our Edwardian house..........I think it's a shame to spoil them and would rather leave them wrapped up for ever even though they're probably not worth much anyway.
A few questions I'd love answered but have struggled so far.
1) How could I get a rough idea of their date, can anyone here have an educated guess?
2) How do you tell if they are indeed printed rather than hand painted....I keep changing my mind.
3) Anyone know of an online recource that may help us.
Many thanks for any help offered guys........appreciated, we'd really love to know a bit more about these.
Cheers,
Kenny
