My main bathroom, which I am trying to complete, is in a former bedroom on the 1st floor of my 1840 London semi. The current floor is mainly original rather narrow pine boards which are in poor shape and chipboard which has been laid over the major pipe runs to the cupboard housing the hot water tanks, pressure vessels etc.
We want to cover the floor with something like lino or rubber (to make it both fairly waterproof and comfortable for bare feet) but I dont want to have to build up the thickness too much. What is the minimum thickness of ply I should use to cover the boards first, and should I get the ply down before decorating? I do not intend to lay the floor myself and would rather not have to lay the ply either, which I assume the flooring contractor will do for me.
