Minimising dust from exposed brickwork

Hi all!

I’ve removed the plaster from the fireplace in my c.1870s property and would like to keep the breast exposed. I had thought to seal the brick to minimise the dust, as the surrounding walls are about to be painted white (!) but from what I’ve read this may not be a good idea re breathability/damp. Any advice on what to do/not do gratefully received! TIA.

Most of the dust will be simple precipitate from the atmosphere and will not originate from the brick or mortar work. Don't seal the brickwork, it does little to nothing and can harm the masonry in some circumstances. A soft brush and vac will be all you need.

The thing is, the bricks were never intended to be exposed and would have always been lime plastered. They will be dusty, unless you lime plaster them, or lime wash/bag rub if you must see the brick outlines.

Do not seal them, it is irreversible damage that will lead to issues.

I believe you can use wallpaper paste to coat brickwork to stop dusting.
As it is cellulose it is breathable and doesn't cause any problems.
I've never tried it but it seems to be a tried and tested method of the 'lime community here.
