Thanks for the tipoff. I shall look forward to that. Pity Woodbridge Tide Mill isn't taking part. I've lost track of the number of times I've tried to catch it working!
As for Woodbridge, at the moment it's not workable at all due to the state of the water wheel (and it was never very satisfactory after its restoration as the big tide pond had been turned into a marina and there was only a little bit left for the mill). Still, there's also Buttrum's Windmill in the town and also well worth a visit though it doesn't produce flour.
I *think* the mills on the "taking part" list are just the ones producing flour on the day (I ought to *know*, being chairman and all that, but hey, as long the office elves are doing their job I suppose it's OK) - Both the Woodbridge mills are open, for example. Get out and enjoy a wet and windy day out!
The poor ol' office elves... pay 'em b***** all (and they do it cos of lurve for The Cause) and then sit back and take the glory. I know how it all works Hughes.
I shall certainly be visting any ol' mill I can find - especially ones with tea shoppes (like Little Salkeld) and good pubs nearby.
Visited this one very recently - wunnerful. Rescued from proposed demolition in the thirties by localsoutraged at the prospect, and a press campaign by SPAB. SPAB also gave a donation (I think five gns...) to aid the purchase.
Grinds on Sundays. Lovely walks.
Come on - you must have some idea about the mill in the post below... I need some info!
Oh, we pay our office elf. Not nearly enough, but we do pay him.
As for Houghton, well, I used to work for the firm that reinstated the water wheel about 6 years ago. What more do you want to know? There's a really odd arrangement for the governors that keep the gap between the millstones constant - when you follow all the gear trains round you end up back where you started with no discernable benefit having been performed.
It is being looked into (that is, of course, a classic lofty London-based society's response which means we'll do something about it when it's too late).
No, really, the elf is looking into it as we type.
I'm also trying to get office elves involved... poss SP*B elf should contact S*VE elf, who has had his ears bent! I have to take some pics now. That means standing as ever in the road or trespassing -- the things we do for BaR.
It's a trad group of farm buildings, including I gather a former mill which is part of a barn... surrounding a trad farmhouse (not to be demolished) which I think should not be demolished (in a CA). There is a complex planning history, and a VERY irate City Councillor ... who would welcome help to try to overturn the demolition permission. The CPRE will also be not happy bunnies... nor the Town Council... and the water authority may yet put a stop to it all, but I'm very unhappy with the CO...
I reckon it's against PPG15 and a call in may be possible. That will take a concerted amount of complaining though.
The fact that the buildings have been neglected and the slates removed from the roof is not the fault of the buildings, so why that should be a consideration - in addition to the desire by the developer to make more money from a small housing estate than re-use -- I know not.
I suspect the site may be rather older than the current buildings - red sandstone ranges. Rural area.
Wet and windy - too true. Unlike oop north. It's been a perfect day.
Still Penrose - you manage to escape from Penrose Towers rather a lot - to forin' climes, from whence you send us gloating e-mails and crow about the finer points of Chablis and stuff - so I reckon you only reside in w and w EA for a very small part of the year.
