Called in yesterday evening for a drink, and stayed for more than one... it's lovely!

But it's not a 'family' hotel, and there's no pool in the first phase, and very nominal spa facilities, so it won't appeal to everybody, while there have been already been problems attracting the kind of top-notch staff on which this kind of hotel stands or falls.

I have to say that the two young people who served us drinks, the receptionist, and others I spoke to yesterday were all so friendly and wildly enthusiastic about the building, which has been solidly booked since opening. I was encouraged to wander around, shown into rooms with other artwork not in the foyer, and allowed to take pics.

The fact two of us turned up looking less than glam (it was cold, we were en route home after a day's sightseeing, dressed for comfort and warmth rather than cocktails...) didn't turn any hairs.

You can call in for a drink, a coffee, snacks, tea and scone in the afternoon, posh meals, and they do what sounds an unmissable afternoon tea in the new conservatory overlooking the bay at twelve quid a head.

Thats a great job. I would worry about its viablity as a hotel, with all the problems english seaside resorts have, especially for the higher spec market. However, you say its solidly booked at the moment, so I really hope they are the exception - certainly a building worth seeing.
