Metal strip draft excluder

My house dating from 1633 has a large wood front door probably dating from the 18th or 19th century as the original front door is now in what we would describe as the side of the house.

The Door is ill fitting and drafty, when i was a boy living in a similar situation the front door had thin strips of a brass like metal nailed inside and around the door frame as a kind of draft excluder or weather strip.

Does anyone know where I could get this kind of metal strip to act as a draft excluder for my front door.

if it'll cover the gap, sure. I wonder if brown plastic... unacceptable thought.

You might be better using a "worm" and a big heavy curtain. They drive you mad at first but you will soon get used to them.

Try the local DIY store but my personal preferance is, as schoolmarm suggests, to use a heavy curtain.

I use it on an arched front door...quite a production making that work.

Probably not the best weatherstrip, but better than nothing.

I had a firm come and look at some of my windows (mostly drafty wooden casements) to refit them and fit an embedded draft excluder...is this worth it, are there companies you might recommend for the SE of UK or could my local carpenter do just as good a job?

I ask as it seemed very expensive!

I thought copper strip was more normal as a draught proofing strip - easily attached iwth small pins every 6" or so. Cut out around hinges, etc.

Hardly works but looks good.

Get a big curtain.

We just got our box sashes draught proofed and its amazing. So much better/quieter. We had a joiner on site at the same time and he said he coul ddo it, but it was a pig to do and there was no way he could do it as quickly as the guys who didnt do anything else all day.

Craig - who did you get to draft proof your sash windows?

There seem to be a few firms that do this, but a recommendation would be good. I know someone who wasn't very impressed when they had Ventrolla (if that's how you spell it!) do theirs.

Thanks Craig. I'd seen their website before, and was contemplating trying one of their DIY kits - but then again the thought of getting someone else to do it is quite appealing!

Thames Valley is unfortuneately too far away from me, but their East Midlands man might come this far. The fact that they look to be something of an informal franchise arrangement appeals - each fitter has a vested interest in doing a quality job.
