Moved into our Edwardian terrace last month. We de-wallpapered the lower half of our downstairs room and the plaster was in fairly bad condition, one section had completely blown away from the wall and it was a bit of a mish mash of gypsum and lime, so we just got a gypsum skim to even it all out. I now think we rushed into this because we wanted to have it decorated, and there are now sections not drying properly where it borders the kitchen (tiled kitchen seems to be causing damp in the walls? pics attached of this) and the only section on an external facing wall actually was mostly lime - and now we have covered that with gypsum. There was also a section which had a sort of spongey white material in it which now is not drying after over a month (pics attached).
I think we have made a mistake and I basically would be very grateful to hear if anyone has had similar experiences, and if you fixed it. I am worried we have messed up and don’t know if we should ask someone in to fully remove all the gypsum and restore it to lime plaster - but if the kitchen is causing the moisture issues then this will still keep happening. We really do not have the budget for something this big but I don’t want to damage the house. We will already need to pay quite a bit for repointing the external wall, and removing concrete from it, added by the previous owners.
We just applied a mist coat today and some areas on the external facing wall look far damper than the rest - and so I am worried these are some new damp problems we have created.
