Just back from Cluny in France and was surprised at the number of medieval buildings that still survive there. The town was built to support the construction of an enormous abbey between 4th and 12th centuries. The abbey was sadly demolished after the French Revolution.
Bunch of cool houses remain. They very often have very elaborate stone windows on the upper floor. I am told the merchant and his wife would sit at either end of the windows to be observed in their finery.
The ground floor tended to have some sort of workshop or shop area, always with an arch.
There is one for sale - it consists of 2 houses - one from 12th century and one from 15th century. It's for sale here https://www.patrice-besse.co.uk/ads/character-houses-for-sale-in-france-saone-et-loire-cluny-provence-languedoc-roussillon-cote-d-azur-upper-savoy-pb274100 at 180K Euro which is very cheap for the area so caveats apply. Across the street the shop fronts were all arches in the drawing at a local restaurant.
A slightly posher building with similar architectural bits from a bit later on. They call this one the Pope's Palace. There was something about a pope in Cluny but I wasn't paying attention.
