Mediaeval building discovered in Leicester (of all places)

Blimey! There's a turn up. And in Leicester too. It's never been my favourite place. Surprising to find a building that old anywhere in Leicester. Planners and developers seemed to have more or less used a scorched earth policy in Leicester over the years, as they did in Loughborough just to the north.

What a lovely find! A curious article accompanying it though, I wonder why they're calling for more information about the current owner.

No doubt it will be part of a curry house before long.

I can imagine a developer now in a blind panic about this potential gem being photographed by a member of the public from the shopping centre before they'd had a chance to clear the site without saying a word.

I wonder if it'll still be there tomorrow?

That is indeed a wonderful find. Similar buildings can often be seen where small car parks have been tucked in behind High Street premises. Ramshackle cat slide roofs are a tell tale sign--there's one in Bedford and I recently spotted one in Winslow.

This building is described as 'mediaeval', is this correct?
My own house is from the same period but, when asked I have descibed it as 'Tudor'.
I don't think that 'Tudor' describes my house very well because it is all masonary at alarming angles (like Caerphilly castle) and no timber framing at all. Certainly 'mediaeval' would give a better sense of my property but is this correct for a 16th century house?

An interesting point. I think of Mediaeval as before 1500, so would agree that it doesn't include the 16th century although things didn't change abruptly of course.

I don't think of our house (timber-frame, 1550) as Tudor, mainly because that reminds me of brick (think Hampton Court), but Lavenham's abundance of timber-framed buildings are usually described as Mediaeval (15th century) so I guess we're 'Tudor in the Mediaeval style' :wink:

I'm sure there are loads of examples contrary to this description though. Actually, I tend to regard our house as Elizabethan, purely on the basis of the date (give or take a few years), but then she was a Tudor Queen.

It's probably easiest to just say 'old'. :lol:

As far as I'm concerned, the medieval period ended on the 22nd of August 1485. And the vast majority of our most iconic Tudor buildings are from the Elizabethan era - "Tudorbethan".

has nobody carbon dated it, might get an officail answer to what period it is

that could have been built in the 70's for all we know. ,they do look like Tudor bricks but even though the studs are close together isn't this kind of box construction post medieval?
