Maximum water abstraction from private borehole?

I seem to remember someone once quoting a figure for the maximum amount of water that you can abstract from a private borehole, without needing special permission. But I can't find it in a search of the forum.

Does anyone have this information, please?

AFAIK the limit is 20cu.m. a day for domestic use. Average domestic use is 170L per day in the UK (I think). So unless you have more than 100 people in your house, you are unlikely to exceed this limit. If the borehole is to be used by more than one household, then I think you need to pass regular water tests. Abstraction licences are no longer required, but planning permission is. The man who drills the hole should be able to advise on the regs. Note that you may find quite a bit of iron in borehole water which can be a pain to deal with.

No Joce - we already have the borehole, but it's disused. We're about to exchange contracts on selling the house, and the purchaser asked me what they would be allowed to do if they brought the borehole back into use.

There are always risks in that. A friend of mine was digging the first few spits of a hole in his garden, when a passer-by called to him, "I could save you a lot of work with that."

"Oh yeah," said my friend, "how could you do that?"

"Well," said the passer-by, "I've got a huge hole in my garden that I don't need any more. You can have it for free, if you come and collect it yourself."

So my pal hired a lorry and drove to the chap's house. Sure enough, in the back garden was a truly enormous hole. Together they loaded it on to the lorry, and the chap kindly offered to ride with my friend back to his house, to help unload the hole.

Some miles down the road, the chap looked out of the lorry's rear window. "Stop!", he shouted. "The hole's fallen off."

My friend screeched to a halt and put the lorry into reverse gear.

Neither of them has ever been seen again.
