Matt black finish for Suffolk featherboard building

Anyone got any recommendations for the best finish to put on my new garage?

The house is listed GII and the planning consent for the garage requires a "matt black stain" on the featherboard cladding. I've tried a couple of test areas in Sadolin, but on the sawn surface it tends to give a variable finish - mainly matt, but with some semi-glossish patches.

Firstly, how fussy do you think a CO likely to be about the word "matt"? Secondly, if you think I need to choose a different finish (ie: more perfectly matt), have you got any recommendations?

I always use mat-black sadolin.

It dulls down after a while, and the finish gets better with every subsequent coat.

Unless you want to use boiled tar substance( NaaHhh)

Old engine oil will matt down eventually. Messy stuff, though, and perhaps no longer actually legal to use!

But is there a Sadolin that's actually labelled "matt"? I could only find two choices of sheen - one called "semi-gloss" and the other not called anything (except the colour).

Spread it well Penners, recoat again about 6 months later when the boarding has shrunk ( the unpainted bits will show up). Ideally the boards should be painted before they get nailed in position.

Recoat again after one year and after two or three coats ( or years later) when it needs it, just to keep it smart.

I like Sadolin Superdec, and I know it does say "woodstain" on the tin, but it has always seemed more like a paint than a stain to me? I've used it (the white and brown, but not tried the black) to paint house window frames before. It does also claim to be microporous, which I can't comment on, but it doesn't seem to crack and flake like alkyl paints.
All that said and done though, most old weatherboarded barns around here do seem to have a definite coating on the timber rather than just a stain, so if that is the type of effect you want I imagine Superdec would be good.

Ah - that's a different Sadolin to the one I've tried. I'll give it a go, thanks Middi.

As to the unpainted bits when the boarding has shrunk, I've already started to pre-paint the feather-edge, in order to avoid that.

b*rd br*nd brushing tar (coal tar based) the traditional finish! g**gle it for further info. glossy to start with, but will soon dull down.

Thanks, Andrew. I recently saw a new building finished in that material. It looked - as you say - quite glossy, which is why I rejected BB as an option. However, I'm encouraged to hear that it dulls down.

penn - defo the right stuff to use.... it will dull down by the autumn if applied now.... best to thin down for new wood using some turps..... best applied over sawn timber that is starting to g'rey down' a bit..... so you might care to leave until next summer? one less job for this summer !!

The featherboarding is sawn, but it's also tanalised. Do you know if that will affect the BB?

penn - that will be fine; just make sure that the timber is dry and that the bb is thinned down to ensure it all soaks in..............

I'm proud to say that I have already blacked the top edges with Sadolin. Smartie-pants, eh? (I mean me, not you!)
