Love the shell ladies but wished I lived closer for a visit. Used to be a shell garden on Boscome front in Dorset when I was growing up. Has anyone else visited it? No idea if still there.

Nemesis - thats the one in Southbourne (near Boscombe) I went to 5 or 6 times as a child - so upset it was knocked down. Boo

There's a lovely shell grotto - well, more of a mini-pavilion really - in the Abbey Gardens on the island of Tresco in the Scillies.

If you've never visited Tresco or the Abbey Gardens, put it high on your list. It's a fascinating little island not much more than two miles long, but with loads to see. At the north end is wind-blasted heathland, looking almost Scottish, while at the south end are the Abbey Gardens growing all kinds of exotic sub-tropical plants.

You can take a day-trip by helicopter from Penzance - a 20-minute flight. Have your lunch at The New Inn (the only pub on the island). Excellent fish-and-chips. Don't plan to stay in the Island Hotel unless you've discussed it with your bank manager first!
