Where do I find historical maps? We have been advised to look back into old maps for information to support the removal of an outbuilding. I will vist the Library but was wondering if there was on online resource.

I have to provide a survey of significance of the outbuilding and it may appear on historical maps. I would like to get all the available info before I instruct the surveyor. I also want to research for my own interest.

sonya have you asked your neighbours if they have old photos of your house? my neighbour had a lovely photo of my house with the two stone cottages in the garden, long since gone.

Is there any chace your soliciter is holding the old pack of deeds? These may contain some plans of the site and suroundings.

If not there's a few on-line resource for old OS map, maybe back to 1870's eg.http://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.aspx?pubid=270

Or your good old local library.

Your local records office will probably have tithe maps from the mid 19th century and may have other earlier maps if you're lucky.

My business partner did the conveyancing and there were no old deeds, sadly. Manchester Archelogical department ( at the Uni) are sending me photographs of a survey they did in 1986. Apparently the outbuilding was much more substantial.

Ok, any info on when it may have been built/previously altered!
I'm trying to get to the question of what sort of mapping Sonya is needing - OS era or earlier.

CO seems to think stone work indicates 17th century.

It might be worth searching for aerial photographs as well. Several sources show up on a Google search - some claiming to be from as early as 1917.

Don't know where you live, but I found out loads about our house by talking with older residents of our town, I was amazed by the info I obtained. Found one gent who had so much info on old local buildings, he is a walking history museum. Another older gent provided spoken info. . An older lady showed my photos of it from when she was a child.
Local suryeyor? Old newspapers? Local museum?
It really was worth talking to older locals for me.
