Hi all,

Does anyone know, in the london-ish area, who might provide the following:

- Bevelled mirror panels for a hallway
- For a 6 door wide wardrobe, have the front done in bevelled mirror strips

I wonder if mirror is as expensive as those glass backsplashes for kitchens. Actually, maybe they are only expensive when you start cutting them for electric plugs, etc

I use these people for cut to size toughened glass, and they do mirror too. They seemed to have a lot of clients with vans and were a bit concerned that I didn't when I went to collect, but were very pleasant. If you know exactly what you want they might be worth a call. When I was trying to find somewhere to cut mirror to size and bevel it, I was told that there is genuine bevelled glass, and fake.

Genuine bevelled mirror glass is much thicker than ordinary modern glass, to allow for a shallow bevel without weakening the edge of the glass. It is very rare and very expensive. (Also very heavy!)

Fake is just ordinary modern mirror with a light bevel. It cannot take a proper period bevel because it is not thick enough. It looks OK-ish unless there is some genuine bevelled mirroring nearby, in which case it looks awful, like the mirror on a flatpack wardrobe.

Also I was told period mirroring was done by a different process, which produces a slightly different tone of reflection. Modern mirrors have a verycold crisp, too-perfect reflection.

None of this may matter, and the price was what influenced me to have the cheapest. Hundreds of pounds for a proper match for one half of a wardrobe door, or £50 for a pair in modern glass.

Ohh I don't know Penners - if it makes me look a little better I might be persuaded. Cheaper than plastic surgery, but more expensive than a trip to the Hall of Mirrors at the Funfair.

Thanks for the recommendation -- I just spoke with the guy and was very helpful. I guess it's a made to measure service, so he comes in and will price it. It would be good to get other quotes, so I will look around.

Also good to learn that the antique mirror is much more expensive than the regular mirror. And, based on a previous poster's comments, i think I may actually prefer just regular mirror.

The other cool thing your guy indicated was that he also does mirroring for the front doors of a wardrobe. I am tempted to do bevelled edge mirror fronts for the wardrobes in my bedroom, as I would prefer that part of the home to be 30s/40s. Maybe something like narrower strips of bevelled mirror, in the center doors and wider on the left/right. Let's see. I'll need many more examples.

My bedroom mirror distorts its image dreadfully. It makes me look old and overweight.

I just pray that it's an antique mirror.
