Maintaining Quarry Tiles

Here's a question that bother's me. How should you look after an indoor quarry tiled floor. As far as I can see the tiles are sitting directly on earth/soil so if I was the floor with a mop, or vacuum it with a Dyson, surely this is going to drag the stuff through the gaps between the tiles. I don't want to have to scrub around on the floor tile by tile, so I assume there's got to be a "traditional method". After all the house is 100 years old and lasted this long.

Sorry to say that the traditional method prob is scrub each one!

And a broom.

Just make sure everyone takes their shoes off.

But if there is an answer i'm keen to know it!
