You'd have to work for several decades for that!

Wish they wouldn't keep wasting our cash on these initiatives which achieve very little.

One of the things that I've always enjoyed most about Northumberland is its understated charm. For the most part, its attractions aren't shoved in your face - you're just left to find them out quietly for yourself. Even Hadrian's Wall is largely un-touristified - just the occasional modest car park, where you can walk up and discover one of the world's most famous and staggering historic landmarks.

But just you wait until the Welcome Co-ordinator starts to try and justify his/her £30k a year. Every market town will become an "Experience", with little diesel-powered trains to ferry the tourists around. And of course at the end of it there'll be a survey for you to fill in.

We have had any amount of 'initiatives' over a number of years. Life remains much the same, despite those being paid to make it so much 'better'.

Northumberland is a very large county, with many market towns. The jam will have to be spread very thinly.

I didn't think the future of my local market town was so much under threat. Yes the conservation area is a riot of placcy doors and windows and shops struggle to keep going, but I hadn't noticed it slipping as yet into some large crater.

We are sceptical of these sort of initiatives, and those in charge (who come all bright eyed and zealous as they know so much better than we local yokels what will be good for us and their own careers) treated with a healthy dose of being ignored, in the main. Unless we really hate what they are thrusting upon us, in which case we show little mercy.
