Shelli - I'm no expert, but I think that looks a lovely bit of wall. One of the skills I'd like to develop as I have (probably) miles of stone walling around my place.

Again - I'm no expert, but the advice on here when faced with recalcitrant mortgage companies seems to be to insist on a specialist surveyors report from someone who understands historical buildings - and that generally doesn't include office-based loss adjustors/risk assessors/underwriters. It might not convince them, but has to be worth a try...

Fortunately our survey was so full of stuff, that they only thing they insisted on was 5-bar locks! They surveyor included everything in his report, but basically took the view that the house had been here for x00 years, and was likely to provide suitable security for another 25.

I agree totally - I think the problem we faced was that we knew that the house was a total wreck. If we had had a full on warts and all survey we might not have got funds. I cant stress enough what a total wreck it was - will be in a position to post the before and after pictures soon - am getting pretty excited.

Walling is def. a useful skill to have in our area - the good ones are really in demand. They've started promoting it in schools to the early leavers, taking them out on vocational training.

As Shelli says, craftsmanship is not dead, and walling is certainly alive and well in our area (my area is the same as Shelli's - and incidentally Andrew Bodenham's, and probably a few others here - Oop North is taking over this forum )

The new A590 High & Low Newton bypass - the road to Barrow in Furness, opened today http://www.a590.co.uk/home.asp - has recently provided by far the biggest new stone walling job anywhere in the country; 5km of dry-stone walling according to the website. It's quite a magnificent piece of work - almost worth driving to Barrow to see it. (Well maybe not going all the way to Barrow) And also incidentally, anyone interested in dry stone walling, and conveniently able to visit the Westmorland County Show ground near Kendal, can see a permanent display of many of the different regional styles side by side, from Cotswold to Highland Scotland (plus most of the regions in between)

Indeed this forum is graced on occasions by Schoolmarm, who is skilled in the art of walling and a member of the appropriate association.

We have a long piece of drystone wall too. Much of it around in the north, each area has its own style. Vast quantities date from various Inclosure Acts.

Bypasses seem to be a good source of employment - the Haltwhistle bypass (through National Trust land) and the new bypass at Temple Sowerby has a new stretch of walling too.

Incidentally - for those oop north who buy the Cumbria Life magazine and have admired the illustrations of local towns, villages and characters (including Barrow) by Trevor Green over the past few years - there is an exhibition (opened this evening) of his work at UpFront Gallery near Penrith. Free and the paintings are reasonably priced (I bought one of Alston).

I add - the bypass cuts through the camping field used every year by the TR Register Tour of the Lakes.

Even the dry stone wall doesn't compensate for the noise.

Ask your friendly local authority historic buildings officer/conservation officer for help and support - I quite often write to mortgage companies to get retentions dropped (and have yet to fail in doing so)................. I think that my model letter was posted here some time ago by nemesis..........

They always do a good demo of walling at Lowther show as well - with the added bonus of a) seeing Prince Phillip competing in horse driving (Hee - yah! git a bladdy move awn) and b) HM the Queen wandering around in headscarf - I was stood next to her for about 5 minutes watching falconry display before i realised - strange moment - always knew i was destined for great things - this confirmed it

But like you say - not worth going all the way to Barrow - stop at Grange-over-Grass for Higginson's pie then turn around!

incidentally grange outdoor pool would be a beautiful renovation project - edwardian Lido built 1912 that closed in 1992 i think - then they built a pool nearby called Berners that closed after 3 years 'cos they couldn't afford to run it

But how mean to poor Barrow, not one of the most architecturally pleasing parts of the area but lovely people and surprisingly nice beaches. I shall certainly watch out for Nem's walling next time I'm up there.

But chavs and silt were what I was expecting! But the beaches around B-in-F (Admittedly not actually in) are largely empty and not the gravelly populated sort us Southerners usually see. OH did warn us we may 'glow' later and not with health!
