Log burner fitting

Going to fit a log burner myself.

Have fitted and secured the flue liner down the flu and once the fireplace is removed think I may have a go myself as I would like it done neatly. Have read up on it and it seems fairly straight forward.

Any pitfalls I need to look out for?

I strongly suspect that you will need it signed of by a HETAS engineer.

(If it is not signed off properly you may have insurance issues.)

So other than that it seems quite straight forward to me.

You can go through Building Control.

It is indeed reasonably straight-forward but, aside from the 'approval' issue, be ready for the hernia risk of manoeuvring a heavy lump of steel into position - even the small ones can be much heavier than one expects.

If you've read the stove fitters manual (internet search if you haven't and they've recently made it more difficult to find anything on that site) you should be good. In England it is supposed to be signed off by someone with a bit of paper and that'll cost a few hundred. In Scotland there is no need to have someone with a bit of paper.

I'm planning to install my own too as £1000 for half a day of work seemed excessive. That bit of paper is the ransom. I'll report back if I do mine before you do yours.

Did mine myself. Put in a building notice with the local authority for £95 (ten years ago), they sent out someone to inspect at the end - no professionals at all.
Problem was that the flue was bent as I fed it up from inside the fireplace and although I tried to straighten it in the flue it tends to want to push the cowl to one side leaving a gap that rain could get in. Don't know how the professionals would have got round that.
