Loft insulation

Now having rooms full of rolls of loft insulation I need to get it up there. Basically will be okay except for certain areas where the "joists" for want of a better term are shall we say not very substantial and would not like to try to walk on them even if using a bit of floor boarding. What I need is some method of laying out insulation in areas about 5m from where I can get at. What sprang to mind is one of the things rubbish collectors use to pick up bits of litter but I would need rather a long one. Grateful for any better suggestions.

What you want is an old-timey chimney sweep type individual.

A waif of a boy to scuttle over your fragile joists.

Failing that you can get those gripper things at places like the 'Helping Hand Company' but I doubt you'll get the distance needed.... Could you use a piece of 25x 45mm timber with a nail on the end? You could sacrifice some big bulldog clips which might make a pushing /lifting action a little easier??

Start with cutting the length you need and then roll that up, then all you'll need is a set of drain rods.

Put the free end end down and facing you (maybe kneel on it) and then just push the roll away from you across the area you're trying to cover using the drain rods. It'll unroll, cover the area and when it's all unrolled it'll have reached the far side if you calculated correctly. Repeat as required...

Have you any idea what a waif wants as an hourly rate?

Regards the drain rods yes that is fine for one layer but I am putting a 200mm layer over a 100mm layer. It is laying the 100mm between the "joists" which will pose the problem as they are at right angles to where I can position myself up there. The 200mm layer should as you state unroll itself into position, in theory.

We have fragile joists never meant to be walked on. To save the perfect Georgian ceiling, I acrowed the room, with boards and padding under the ceiling. Then, as a one-off operation I - all of 10st - could walk on it.
Insulation, but not covering the joists so that's about 2" thickness.
Murder the woodworm.
Bit of rafter repair.

Then I boarded the space, but just what I can reach from the loft hatch I created. I shall never walk up there again.

The savings from going from 120mm to 270mm are pretty minimal

If you can roll 200mm easily then you probably won't find any difference sweating over another 100mm. The diminishing returns of adding extra insulation are staggering - some insulation everywhere (that's achievable) is massively more effective than adding lots more in just some places.

A waif would probably cost a fraction of what a big'ol unit like I cost....

in terms of transferring cost from the 'waif expense' pot into a time saving pot elsewhere.... have you thought about space blanket type insulation?? Do you need breathable insulation?? If not it might be a thought?

Lower weight, easy to cut and roll...
