Not a member but I get their email updates. Interesting to follow their progress, if painfully slow, in getting VAT reduced to 5% on authorised repairs and alterations.

Our house came with a few acres of land and in a rush of enthusiasm I joined the CLA as we had a minor issue with a public footpath (since resolved by Mrs FF's own tenacity) and thought their touted 'expert advice' on land matters would be helpful. It's come up a few times in the past on here. Looking back I'd say my (limited) experience of people who are members has been as described by a former contributor to this forum:
"I tend to feel the LBOC has rather too many as members who simply want the cachet of owning a listed building, as long as they aren't restricted by laws etc when trying to alter."
It's more expensive, and as far as I can see offers fewer practical benefits than, membership of say the SPAB. But I suppose it depends whether you are looking for advice on repairs and so on, or whether you want to buy a "unique lead plaque" for £120 rather than £150, to stick on the outside of your listed house. Doing so may require Listed Building Consent, but they don't mention that.

You never told me I could have a plaque Gareth!! I want one, but I'd sooner have one of those blue plaques celebrating the Burrows family who lived there from 1850 to 1950. The Burrows family weren't anything special, but why shouldn't they be remembered?

He didn't really know whether the purchase of my field was a terrific investment, wasn't sure how easy it would be to dissuade the public from walking on there. We just fenced them out and it was fine, they walk round the outside of the fence now.
Paying for advice is a waste of money, it's free on here and we're more intelligent and better qualified!!

When we needed help in getting our plans through Babergh Planning, we turned to the Suffolk Preservation Society (SPS) who were extremely quick and helpful. We weren't even members at the time but we have been ever since. Great organisation. Unfortunately we got stuck in ever decreasing circles with Babergh and their cast in stone ruling that any wood clad extension must be painted black. Why? "Because they are all black". "That's only because you make them all black"!! The SPS were very keen to engage and stop this stupid practice and gave Babergh a history lesson.

The LPOC magazine seems informative and well produced to me, though I haven't found a use for the actual 'club' part of it yet. The plaque looks nice but I'm too tight to pay for something that I suppose I could equally well conjure up myself or put on a t-shirt: 'This is a listed building you know...'
I rather assumed SPAB would be a bit high-falutin' for mere muddling-through home-owners, does anyone find SPAB useful for them? More importantly what is the worthiness/loveliness-rating of the magazine, are there lots of nice pictures of windows and handy guides to the naming of rainwater-goods?
