On accessing this morning the following message appeared:

Dear LBOnline User,

English Heritage plans to replace the existing listing, scheduling and registration schemes with a new single register of designated sites. Open access to this Register is likely to be through the Heritage Gateway (http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk).

As a precursor to this, we have now enabled cross-searching of Listed Buildings data through the Heritage Gateway, without the need to log-in to access the information.

We’d be grateful for comments on the searching from regular users of LBOnline. We’d be especially keen to know if you feel there is anything you currently rely on which is missing from the new searching mechanism.

And sure enough, the link brings up the records without the need to have a log-in code (LB Online not in the past available to all).

It is more comprehensive and up to date than Images of England, but without the pictures.

Given all the fuss there was about how burglars, rapists, terrorists and ne'er-do-wells would use "Images of England" to plan their crimes, I can't see unfettered access to every list description lasting long before the "get off my land" brigade start kicking up a stink. Enjoy it while you can.

Well, IoE is pretty comprehensive. It's just this is more so, and doesn't end at 2000, which is what IoE was supposed to. It's not totally up to date yet (unless I'm missing something) the Totnes Brunel Pumping Station listed last week isn't there yet. Speaking of which, it seems Dairycrest hasn't quite got the message about what listing is about:

People power and peer pressure saves Brunel pumping station

Following a campaign led by SAVE Britain’s Heritage, our Fellow Mark Horton and the people of Totnes, English Heritage has had a change of heart and has decided to designate Brunel’s threatened atmospheric pumping station at Totnes as a Grade II building, thus ensuring that it cannot be demolished without listed planning consent. According to reports on the BBC, the owners, Dairy Crest, still do not seem to have got the message, however. Claiming the building was unsafe, a Dairy Crest spokeswoman said the company still intended to demolish an adjoining chimney, built in 1935, and would consider further demolition work once they had received official notification of the building’s Grade II status.


Adam Wilkinson, Secretary of SAVE Britain’s Heritage, described the listing as ‘fantastic news’, and Richard Gage, Conservation Officer for South Hams District Council, said ‘the decision to list the buildings reflects what “people power” can do and how enthusiasm and passion for our historic built environment can really influence the decision-making process’, adding that: ‘The town of Totnes and the South Hams as a whole will benefit from the retention of these important reminders of mid-nineteenth-century pioneering and innovative technological development.’

although the records now pulled together are public ones and freely available in other forms. Not sure that putting the details online is quite such a burglar's charter as is claimed - maybe leaving a window open is more tempting? Or even describing in detail the contents of your stately pile online is possibly just too much of a temptation for some?
