On hearing of a dodgy planning application for conversion of a landmark Victorian building on Margate's seafront into flats, including the ground floor, my girlfriend (of 13 years) applied to English Heritage for a spot listing. The application was passed and the listing arrived a few days later. The main issue was the curved windows -too expensive to repair, wouldn't have met building regs and would have probably been ripped out. Also the shopfronts would have been lost. I may have missed something here, but does the building listing description include the chemist's shop interior?
Another example of why we need interim protection for buildings being assessed for listing sooner rather than later.
According to a letter I recaived from the DCMS on this subject, following inquiries under the FOE Act, fewer than ten buildings have been deliberately damaged in recent years to prevent listing. I know of a number of others, but EH has its head in the sand I think and its records are not to be relied on.

English heritage were very interested in the intact farmacy interior, as was the Conservation Department. The conservation team didn't want to get involved in the listing because it was "too political".
Other Council departments, such as the Empty Homes were against the listing and tipped off the owner who demolished the farmacy interior immediatley. Sad, but at least the building is now safe. English Heritage were great and did the listing in about 3 weeks.
It was also Strange that the planning department architect was drawing up the plans for residential pastiche entrances to replace the original Victorian shopfronts. In my experience, the planning department can advise on your plans, but don't do them for you. Maybe he's a Ramsgate fan -the developer is the manager of Ramsgate FC...

Yes, they knew it was a risk and were very interested in saving it. For that reason, they only visited the building from outside without notifying the owner. Unfortunatly the council tipped the owner, so he was able to rip out the chemist interior before the visit.
