We've just had lovely new hardwood doors and sliding sash windows put in the front and back of our house (photos here on my photobucket page) and are in a quandary about how to look after them. Obviously we'd like to use linseed oil and linseed paint, but Holkham's site suggests that in cold weather it can take as long as a week for each coat of paint to dry out.
But right now we're also getting the house re-rendered with lime, and the lime guys are going back and forth through the doors, brushing against them etc, and inevitably getting a bit of lime render on the window and door frames. So we think we probably shouldn't paint the wood until they've finished (another three weeks -- don't worry about frost! We hardly ever get frost in the Isle of Man in October or early November). Is there anything we can do to protect the doors in the meantime?
Actually, it might be just the front door that's an issue. The window guy said we could leave the windows untreated if we wanted. But the joiner who put in the front door was very insistent that we protect it asap and so far all we've done is keep it covered with a sheet of DPM when we're not in the house.
Taking the door off is not an option right now.
I wondered if it would last the winter with just one application of linseed oil, and then we could paint all the woodwork in the spring (which is when we're probably going to paint the exterior render).
Another question! What if we were to treat the front door first with some kind of wood preserver? Would that be a bad idea if we want to later use linseed paint?
