Linseed oil paint question

We have a lovely old rubblestone shed attached to our cottage and because it had been covered in concrete, (not any more its now lime repointed and limewashed) the old wooden window frame has not only rotten, it is now too small. We have decided to make our own simple wooden frame and paint it with linseed oil paint before we fit it. We have never used linseed oil paint before so I need to ask you all a question -

Can we use the ordinary knotting solution that we have used for every other woodwork project or would it be better to buy the one from Holkhams ?

I bought Holkhams, but it didn't look too different from others I've used in the past.

I also bought Holkhams, but I can't see a different manufacturer's being a problem. I'd happily use someone else's without any great worry.

Thankyou Skier-Hughes and Feltwell. I suppose that I was just being "tight" :lol: . The knotting solution I buy in our local ironmongers is £2.99 and the Holkhams one is £16 (a slight difference in price). I was just worried that if I used the cheap one, that the paint would not dry.

I think it will dry on pretty much anything eventually.

Purists look away now! It dries on glass for instance - rather than spending ages cutting in, I tend to paint onto the glass, then take the excess paint off when dry using a steel ruler against the timber and a razor blade in a holder.

The purist ,or at least pedant, might say that it doesn't dry at all but rather is polymerises. That happens in air no matter what it's painted on.

I've never been sure about whether to leave a thin border of paint on the glass. Some of our windows have quite a distinct border of paint on the glass - or is this just carelessness?

That is the correct way to do it I think.

I find it's better to put the paint just where you want it so that there is no excess to remove

That's pretty much what I was going to say. The "proper" approach is to paint onto the glass by around 1/8" I believe, so to form a seal across the glass/putty joint, but to do so leaving a nice neat line so no scraping back is required.

For those less patient or not blessed with a steady hand there is my method! I must have another go at doing it properly really - practice makes perfect and all that.....

I tend to use masking tape on the glass but if you have tonnes of 'georgianesque' window panes this can be almost as time consuming as painting carefully. The only advantage I can see is you get perfect lines and it's fun tearing off the tape.
Don't leave the tape on too long or it bonds to the paint and the adhesive sticks to the glass in summer.
