We've just taken up the carpet in our master bedroom with a view to sanding and polishing the floorboards. These are generally in pretty good nick. However, at some point when such things were fashionable, someone evidently stuck (hideously patterned) lino down straight onto the boards. This has mostly been removed by a previous owner, but there are still patches where it was glued around the edges of the room and is really stuck, and especially over the hearth (which was previously hidden under the carpet). Does anyone have any bright ideas for getting it off, other than just going at it with a scraper (which could take ages)? Will it be OK to get off as much as possible and then sand off the rest, or will the sander object to anything that isn't wood? Thoughts and suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks.
