Lining the chimney

Hi,

I'm looking into getting my chimney lined, as the current brickwork chimney is leaking into the bedroom, from the dining room fire below.

I'd rather do this myself, as there is scaffolding already up here and am currently rebuilding the top of the stack. Any pointers on what to use regarding the inflatable balloon, the spacers for it and the type of mix used to line it?

Are you currently having an open fire, presumably so if it's an open brickwork flue at the moment. This could be your opportunity to go for a stove and reap the benefits of burning fuel to heat the home instead of the sky. If you go for a stove then a flexible liner is worth thinking about, easy to install, certainly cheaper and you won't need to break into chimney breasts every so often to centre it.

This chimney is going to stay as an open fire, the only one in the house! I agree that it's not the most economical method of heating the home, but it's in the dining room, which is infrequently used and I'm putting three stoves in other parts of the house.

Plus, it'll keep the missus happy!!

We have some old flues that need a bit of TLC too. I want a flue that works, but also I wish to retain the large cross section of the flue, as we want to fit an appropriate regency fireplace. The large aperture requires a large flue to draw correctly and not smoke in the room.

Options I have considered include -

Flexible steel liner - the circular format means we can lose a lot of flue area, never mind getting hold of large diameter liners.

Thermocrete - poured or cast " ceramic " around a balloon former type solution. Sound good, but breaking into the chimney to centralise the former doesn't appeal, and I also think there will be a much smaller flue.

Eldfast - another "ceramic" type option but more of a coating than the cast Thermocrete option. Currently researching further, I'd be interested to hear of anyone who has had this done and their opinion. More info http://www.landyvent.co.uk/en/installation.htm

Child - Use a small child to parge the chimney by hand. This is my preferred option, but negotiations still ongoing wife and daughter for use of grandson.

Same problem here. Solutions I am considering are 1) major dismantle of the outside of the chimney so as to be able to fit square liners and 2) bypass the current chimney and build a new one on the outside. Both solutions are far from ideal. I will probably go for option 1 as the outside of chimney has been cut into in the past to fit a far too small a liner so I will be putting right old damage as well.
